Gladiator II star Paul Mescal will quit making Hollywood blockbusters if fame becomes ‘overwhelming’

Paul Mescal is Hollywood’s new leading man thanks to his role in Ridley Scott’s iconic film franchise Gladiator II.

In the blockbuster, which also stars Connie Nielsen and Pedro Pascal, he plays Lucius, the son of Russell Crowe’s late character from the first film, Maximus.

And now the 28-year-old star has spoken about the idea of fame in a new radio interview, admitting there is one thing that could make him quit Hollywood blockbusters.

The Normal People actor star said on Virgin Radio UK’s The Chris Evans Breakfast Show that his focus is just on being an actor and not about the fame.

“You’re about to become the most famous actor in the world for at least a few weeks, and you’ll probably become one of the most famous actors in the world for the next few years,” the host began.

“Do you make plans for that psychologically? How do you figure that out? It’s sensible to have a strategy, I would imagine. Or am I being boring?”

“If all of this part goes away and I’m not stopped in the street, but I get to keep doing my job, I don’t care. And I mean that sincerely,” Mescal said.

“I love this job and if the by-product of it sometimes or a symptom of it is, is that you lose a little bit of anonymity, great.

“And if that becomes overwhelming, I will just stop making big films like this and I’ll do something else as long as I can get to act.”

“That’s probably a question for Russell, but like, I hope so,” the Irish actor said with a laugh on the red carpet.

Scott previously told Vanity Fair he thought the Irish actor was so “perfect” for the role, he gave it to him without a screen test.
