Fleming Island boys defend golf crown, Fernandina Beach’s Sadaly Campbell wins girls title in playoff

The Fleming Island boys golf team completed its back-to-back state championship quest and Sadaly Campbell delivered a first for Fernandina Beach.

Campbell, a senior star for the Pirates, won the Class 2A girls individual tournament at Mission Inn Las Colinas Course in a playoff for the first championship by a Nassau County golfer. She’s the first area individual girls state champ since Alexandra Gazzoli of Matanzas won the 2A title in 2022. Before that, Ponte Vedra’s Nicolette Donovan was the last individual champ, winning the 2A crown in 2013.

The Fleming Island boys took all the suspense out of their field, breezing past Delray Beach American Heritage for the team crown with a 6-over 582, a 38-stroke cushion over the Stallions to romp to the 2A team title.

Led by reigning All-News4JAX golfer of the year Tyler Mawhinney, the Golden Eagles were never in doubt during their win at Mission Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills on Saturday.

Mawhinney followed his exceptional sophomore season with a state runner-up finish, going 6-under 138 to lead the repeat. Emmet Kuhlenkamp was fifth with a 2-over 146. Dylan Frein had a 2-under 70 in his final round as one of three Golden Eagles golfers to card a round in the red at the tournament. Mawhinney went 68 and 70 in his two days. Ryan Houck finished in 10th at 8-over 152.

Mawhinney was four strokes back of individual champ Sohan Patel of Plantation American Heritage (10-under 134).

For Campbell, it was a gritty finish. She birdied Nos. 16 and 18 to force a playoff with SLAM Academy’s Dariana Breto.

It’s been a solid week for local golfers in the high school state tournament.

Bolles’ Luke Balaskiewicz finished T-2 in the Class 1A meet with a 3-under 141, just two strokes behind the winner.
