Cynthia Erivo reflects on fan-made Wicked poster controversy

Cynthia Erivo is reflecting on her reaction to a fan-edited Wicked poster.

In October, the actress addressed the manipulated poster on her Instagram Stories, calling it the “wildest, most offensive thing I have seen”.

“The original poster is an ILLUSTRATION,” she added at the time. “I am a real-life human being, who chose to look right down the barrel of the camera to you, the viewer… because, without words we communicate with our eyes,” she wrote.

“None of this is funny. None of it is cute. It degrades me. It degrades us.”

Now in a new interview for the Los Angeles Times’ The Envelope, she has reflected on her reaction.

“Having that passion for what this piece is and loving it so much and knowing how much I want to communicate through Elphaba, that’s probably where that came from,” she told the outlet.

“And so in my little human moment I had … I fell out on the internet, when really I should have just picked up my phone and called a friend.”

“We have these human moments,” she shared. “And me being human and sensitive, I shared something that I think is part of the little girl in me. I realise that there are so many people who love this just as much as I do.”

This is not the first time the 37-year-old has addressed her reaction to the poster.

Just days after her post, she addressed the comments at the 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on the CFDA Fashion Awards red carpet, Erivo clarified her statement “wasn’t necessarily a clap-back”, as the interviewer put it.

Erivo explained her comments stemmed from being “really protective over the role”.

“I’m passionate about it and I know the fans are passionate about it and I think for me it was just like a human moment of wanting to protect little Elphaba, and it was like a human moment,” she added.

“I probably should have called my friends, but it’s fine.”
