The announcement came during her sit-down with the radio show “Good Morning H-Town,” where she took a moment to reveal that she is no longer part of the entertainment company’s lineup.
“Well, I’m not signed anymore,” Ken declared before toasting to her newfound independence. “Cheers to my divorce.”
Additionally, Ken shared that she made the decision to step away from the label based on her drive to return to her independent roots.
“When I first started off, I really did want to be independent, but then it kind of started seeming impossible,” she admitted. However, despite her reservations, Ken took a leap of faith and signed to a record label. But unfortunately, her experience confirmed her initial feelings.
“I did have good opportunities, so I was just like, ‘Okay, I’ll try it.’ I tried it twice, and then I was just like, ‘You know what, no, I wanna be independent,’” she added. “I feel like I work better as an independent artist. Now the lane is opening too.”
Last year, when Ken signed with Roc Nation, the new partnership was immediately met with major excitement from both sides. At the time, Shari Bryant, co-president of the label, praised Ken for artistry and building a loyal fanbase.
“Ken and her amazing team have established such a strong foundation; we at Roc Nation are here to now help build the skyscraper,” Bryant said in an interview after the deal.
At the time, Ken also expressed excitement over her partnership with Jay-Z’s imprint.
“When this year hit, I had no idea where my career would take me. I never thought in a million years my path would walk me into a Roc Nation office.”
