According to Budden, Wayne wanted to address Kendrick over his lyrics, where he raps: “Used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down” and later adds, “Won the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me.”
Budden then claimed that Wayne got in the booth to respond to Kendrick, saying “I’m hearing that somebody picked up the phone, tried to call and see what the energy was, I’m hearing that Kendrick didn’t answer.”
He continued, “I’m hearing that Wayne went in the booth.”
The tension traces back to debates sparked in September when Kendrick was announced as the Super Bowl halftime headliner in New Orleans, overshadowing Wayne, a local legend. Social media erupted with criticism, with many arguing Wayne deserved the spot. Jay-Z, a co-producer of the halftime show, faced backlash, and New Orleans icons like Master P, Juvenile, and Boosie expressed their discontent. Young Money affiliates, including Nicki Minaj, Birdman, and Drake, showed their support for Wayne.
Wayne eventually addressed the situation in a heartfelt Instagram video on Sept. 13, expressing deep hurt over being overlooked.
