Gardener’s World: British TV star Monty Don rushed to hospital in medical emergency

British TV star Monty Don has shared a health update after being rushed to hospital.

The Gardener’s World star, 69, missed scheduled appearances due to a medical emergency, explaining his absence from his ‘An Audience With’ tour in a social media post.

“Hello, I’m so sorry to have disappointed all those people who were going to come and see me … but on Friday afternoon I was rushed to A&E,” he started the message.

“I was kept in the hospital over Saturday, Sunday, Monday with drips and all of the rest of it,” he continued in the video, in which he held golden retriever Nigel.

“But I came home last night, I’m feeling much better, I’m going to spend the next few days quietly recuperating here at home and hopefully by the weekend I’ll be back to full fitness.”

Don didn’t share the nature of his medical emergency.

He followed his video post with a photo of his frost-covered Herefordshire garden along with the caption: “Morning #getting better.”

Don, who stars on the BBC show, suffered a minor stroke in 2008 and spent three days in hospital. He stopped presenting Gardener’s World for some time.

In addition to his physical health problems, Don has also spoken openly about his battle with mental health, in particular Seasonal Affective Disorder, which put a strain on his marriage to wife Sarah.

The couple shares three children.

Earlier this year, he said he was considering ending his time on Gardener’s World and plans to be more selective about projects he takes on.

He told Abode2 magazine in June 2024, “I don’t tend to work quite so hard these days, and when I do take on project, I do them on my own terms.

“At my age now, I’m ready to embrace a quieter, slower pace of life. Watching garden life flow by, what it’s all about.”

Don appeared in Oxford a week ago for a scheduled show. “Tonight’s gig – New Theatre Oxford” he wrote in a post alongside a photo of his dressing room.

He and wife Sarah have been married since 1983 had have two sons and a daughter. They live in Islington in north London.
