Apple is ending iCloud backup for some users very soon — these devices are affected
These old Apple products are starting to rot.
The tech company has announced that several antiquated devices need software upgrades to use iCloud storage backups.
In a customer memo, Apple announced that starting Dec. 18, all devices must be running at least on iOS 9, which debuted in 2015.
Although current data will remain on the devices themselves with no issues, users on iOS 8 or prior will no longer be able to create new backups or access existing backups on iCloud, according to the company.
Older devices from the early 2010s — including the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPod touch fifth generation — are eligible for an iOS 9 upgrade. Users need to go to “software updates” in their settings.
Devices on older operating systems can also be backed up manually to a Mac or PC through the programs iTunes or Finder with a USB cable.
Software updates can be applied that way as well.
Apple said the obsoleting is “to align more closely” with recommended and current system updates.
The news comes after reports that the company plans to sunset a 2024 launched product, the Vision Pro augmented reality headset, of which Apple is looking to create an improved second generation.
Poor sales numbers were associated with user complaints of pain and clunkiness.
Apple also appears to be discontinuing a headphone jack adapter and obsoleting an older Apple Watch model.
