Cop or Flop? New Balance Expands Its Dressy Comfort Line Up with 1906L Black Colorway
New Balance continues to push its dress shoe-sneaker hybrid, the 1906L. Now, the brand has added a new sleek colorway perfect for date night, the office, or a five-mile walk.
Building on the momentum of its loafer-inspired hybrids, New Balance is introducing the 1906L in a sharp black colorway, reminiscent of the Junya Watanabe Man rendition that turned heads at Paris Fashion Week.
Following initial releases in the brand’s signature silver and the muted gray “Raincloud” variant, the 1906L gained new prestige with the viral Watanabe collaboration. Retailing for approximately $332, the Junya Watanabe version featured sleek matte leather uppers that made it a standout. The new 1906L “Black,” while similar in tone, opts for classic New Balance materials, substituting the Watanabe’s leather toe box and collar with breathable black mesh. A subtle embroidered “N” beneath the tongue enhances the minimalist aesthetic.
This all-black iteration offers a clean, understated alternative to the bold silver overlays seen in the original 1906L release. Moreover, it’s much more affordable at $168.
In recent seasons, New Balance has embraced a more experimental approach. Known for its focus on technical running shoes and versatile lifestyle designs, the brand has branched out with bold partnerships, like its work with rapper Aminé. Models such as the BTEE740 featured eye-popping colorways, showcasing an unexpected creative edge.
The New Balance 1906L Black will be available starting December 4th through the New Balance web store.
