Former NFL All-Pro running back Eddie George has achieved significant success as the head coach at Tennessee State University. In George’s four years at the university, he has accumulated a 22-21 record.
This season, George’s team is 4-2 in the Big South/OVC. Last week, he was named one of fifteen finalists for the 2024 Eddie Robinson Award, which honors the national coach of the year in the FCS. This is a huge achievement for a program George took over during the COVID-19 pandemic, elevating it to levels of success it hasn’t experienced in years. Under his leadership, Tennessee State secured its first playoff berth since 2013 and earned a share of the conference title—the first time this has happened in this millennium.
The team’s resurgence has sparked curiosity among football fans, analysts, and players about whether George might be considered for an FBS coaching job in the upcoming offseason. According to On3’s Pete Nakos, George’s name has been mentioned as a possibility for the opening at Kennesaw State. Rumors suggest the school may reach out to gauge interest from the legendary player.
While the offseason remains a topic of speculation, George’s focus is firmly on the present. The goal now is to make history by leading the Tigers to an FCS National Championship.
