Liam Martin engaged: Penrith Panthers star announces his engagement: ‘My favourite person’

Penrith Panthers star Liam Martin is engaged to his partner, Chelsea Leary.

The NRL player, 27, announced the happy news in a sweet Instagram post on Friday, sharing pictures of himself and his new fiancée smiling and showing off her diamond ring while at a secluded beach.

“My favourite person 🤍,” Martin captioned his post, receiving messages of congratulations from his fellow sports stars and fans.

“Yes Martini,” NRL star and Sydney Roosters player Angus Crichton commented. Crichton just got engaged himself after proposing to his partner in Manchester.

Fellow Penrith Panthers star Nathan Cleary added: “Congrats guys <3.”

It remains unclear exactly when the newly-engaged couple started dating, but Martin first shared an Instagram post about Leary back in September 2019 when they attended the Merv Cartwright Medal together.

“Merv Cartwright Medal with his stunner,” he wrote at the time.

Martin recently made headlines for a rib injury – which meant he barely trained ahead of the NRL Grand Final.

He also recently had a shoulder injury.

“I did the ribs leading up to the Roosters’ [qualifying final] – I did it during a wrestle session believe it or not,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“I struggled to train that week, and got it needled up.”

The sports star hails from Temora, NSW, and made his NRL debut back in 2019.

He also plays for the Australian national rugby league team, the Kangaroos and has played for NSW in the State of Origin.

“Dream come true the other night, such an honour to wear the sky blue,” he once said about playing for the Blues in the State of Origin.

After making his debut in the NRL for the Panthers, he wrote in one Instagram post: ”Such a surreal moment it was making my NRL debut on Saturday night.”

“Incredibly proud to be panther no. 584 and couldn’t think of a better bunch of blokes to play alongside. Certainly not the result we wanted but want to say a massive thank you to all the fans, family and friends for the messages.”

Martin’s happy news comes after he experienced some personal family tragedy; a decade ago, his older brother Jarred took his own life at just 22 years old.

He told The Sydney Morning Herald about the moment he found out the tragic news, saying it “still rocks me to this day”.

“I remember seeing my uncle walk up the driveway at that moment and mum said down the line, ‘Jarred’s dead’. I broke down, my uncle hugged me, then we had to go in and tell dad,” he recalled.
