L.A. Rappers Jay Taj And Rome Recount Their ‘Rhythm & Flow’ Battle
Netflix dropped the second batch of episodes for Rhythm & Flow last week and we went behind the scenes with Season 2 contestants Jaxs, Jay Taj, Rome and Sura Ali to talk about the show’s battle round. After cracking a few jokes about the Rome vs. Jay Taj battle, the guys weighed in about the experience.
“It was a great moment for me, I had never been in a rap battle before and to be able to do something like that at that level on that stage with the people that was in that room…” Rome told BOSSIP. “We talked about it before, we had our own talks about the battles and it was good. I do give him the nod, he played the room smarter. We was in a room full of people that don’t know us and the way he rode and then he also got them a little extra four bars off..”
“It was only two bars,” Jay Taj argued.
“But he played against smarter, that’s why we were there — to play,” Rome continued. “So I saw that and I was like, ‘He playing right!’ But but one of the coldest moments in my life.”
“I have to agree,” Jay Taj told BOSSIP. “Battling Rome, and the battle itself, the concept of the battle itself, where we’re going from 14 down to seven — one of us has to go. Whereas like in the cyphers and things like that, they could chop from anywhere. When they put me up against Rome, and it’s so funny because I remember — like we both we knew it. Soon as they called my name, he was like ‘I knew it.’ With that being said, I think a lot of the bars, especially the bars that Rome hit with, a lot of people from home are gonna get.”
“If we could have did that battle… ” Rome interjected.
“Back home,” Jay Taj finished his sentence.
“That’s what I’m saying,” Rome continued. “If we could have did that battle in L.A. Just right there posted up in South Central, like fifty people around us.”
“There was definitely some bars he said that had me rolling in the moment,” Jay Taj recalled. “I’m like, ‘That is funny bro, like that is a great line.’
“Hey bro, it was blessings bro, that was such a great experience,” Rome said.
“I think all the homies are going to call me Gerard from the Westside forever now,”Jay Taj laughed.
“I’m proud of that one, I’m proud of that one,” Rome said, laughing with him.
Sura Ali Suffered From Health Issues While Filming ‘Hustle & Flow’
While it’s great to see that Rome and Jay Taj are able to smile when they look back at the experience, the show wasn’t without moments of tension.
“Honestly me and Jay Taj just got cool last month,” Sura Ali told BOSSIP in a tone that suggested she was not kidding.
It turns out the Brooklyn emcee was battling more than just rappers during the production of Rhythm & Flow, and while she knew she wasn’t feeling entirely her best, she had no idea just how seriously her health was suffering.
“Let’s really get into the nitty gritty,” Ali told BOSSIP. “Let’s just say this — this is something that I that I only spoke to about with certain people, but while I was on the show I was sick and I didn’t find out until I got home. I was in the hospital for five days and I had to get two blood transfusions because I was B12 deficient.”
“People don’t understand vitamin deficiencies like that,” Ali continued. “It’s not that serious when you hear about it, but when you’re dealing with it and not getting enough oxygen to your organs and you are fatigued all the time and you are hungry all the time, and you have to keep going. I didn’t know what was going on. All I just knew is they kept saying, ‘You want to go to urgent care? I’m like, ‘Nah because I have to finish.’ Then when I got home and and I couldn’t operate properly — I’m sleeping for hours. I’m getting dressed to go outside and I’m not going nowhere because I was sick. I was dying for real.”
Fortunately Ali was able to get the care she needed back at home, right?!
The competition is extremely tight on Rhythm & Flow and tomorrow Netflix will release the final episodes — revealing this season’s champion. Will you be watching?
