‘Successful’ shoulder surgeries for Trevor Lawrence, Evan Engram

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Trevor Lawrence is on the road to recovery after undergoing surgery on Tuesday and the team is optimistic that he’ll be ready for the start of next season.

He coach Doug Pederson said that Lawrence, along with tight end Evan Engram, both underwent shoulder surgeries this week and that everything went as well as expected during the procedures.

“Everything was positive in both players cases, and just now looking forward to recovery time,” Pederson said.

Lawrence had been dealing with two issues, including a concussion during a Week 13 loss to the Texans. Lawrence was hit hard by Houston linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair when attempting to slide and his head slammed violently into the ground. Lawrence was in the concussion protocol since then and finally cleared it Sunday morning. He was on the sideline for the Week 15 loss to the Jets.

Lawrence had been dealing with an AC joint injury in his left shoulder and missed games against the Vikings and Lions before returning against Houston. With Jacksonville mired in a lost season with no chance of reaching the playoffs, the team opted to put him on injured reserve to undergo shoulder surgery. Lawrence had the same surgery coming out of Clemson when he was drafted by the Jaguars in 2021.

“It was successful, so he’s now on the road to recovery,” Pederson said.

Engram suffered a labrum injury sometime during a 10-6 win over Tennessee and was placed on injured reserve Dec. 14. Pederson was optimistic but noncommittal that both players would be ready for the start of next season’s offseason program.

“Don’t know that yet. It’s hard to put a put a time frame on it. You know, you don’t want to rush it. But we’ll see how they … I guess the thing is to, in both cases, they’re not long-term, lengthy-type surgeries recovery time. So, at some point this spring they’ll be ready to go.”

The Jaguars (3-11) have imploded this season. They currently hold the No. 4 pick in the NFL draft, according to Tankathon. It’s expected that changes will happen after the end of the season. Owner Shad Khan said before the start of the year that playoffs were the expectation and this was the best team ever assembled by the Jaguars. But Jacksonville has been ravaged by injuries, an inconsistent offense and a defense that is among the league’s worst.

Lawrence, receivers Christian Kirk and Gabe Davis are all on injured reserve. Guard Cooper Hodges and tight end Patrick Murtagh went on IR earlier in the year. Engram and cornerback Tyson Campbell and linebacker Foye Oluokun all spent time on IR earlier in the season, too.
