SY’RAI SMITH AND KRISTA CAMPBELL DROP WICKED-INSPIRED COVER OF ‘THE BOY IS MINE’
Sy’rai, the daughter of Brandy, and Krista, daughter of gospel superstar Erica Campbell, have teamed up for a Wicked-inspired rendition of the iconic 1998 hit “The Boy Is Mine,” originally sung by Brandy and Monica.
The duo took to social media earlier today to announce the release of their unique cover.
“It’s outtttttttt!!!! Go check it out yall the link is in my story. Just wanna say a HUGE thank you to @michaelkorte @thesonglion @syraismith for making this happen I had a BLAST and I hope yall love it,” Krista wrote on Instagram.
Smith, too, posted, “It’s OUT!!! Click the link in my bio to see me and @thekrissc cover the boy is mine. Again thank you.”
Not surprisingly, the pair’s parents couldn’t hold back their pride, taking to social media to congratulate them.
Proud mom Erica Campbell wrote, “@thekrissc and @syraismith siiiiiinngg!!! I’m so proud of you young ladies!!! @brandy and @monicadenise hope y’all are proud too!! #wicked @michaelkorte thanks for having the girls!! This is gold!!”
Brandy showed her support as well, writing,”Girls, thank you for this amazing tribute to @MonicaDenise and I. Love you,
The cover, directed by Wicked musical director Michael Korte and arranged by The Song Lion, blends the classic hit with references to the upcoming Wicked movie.
In the music video, Sy’rai, 22, and Krista,20, take on the roles of Elphaba and Glinda, putting their own spin on the iconic characters.
Korte expressed excitement over the collaboration, saying, “Thank you @syraismith & @thekrissc! My dream Elphaba & Glindas! Thank you @thesonglion for your wicked arrangements. I hope we did you proud @monicadenise & @brandy.”
Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Wicked: Part One, which hits theaters on November 22, 2024, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
The film adaptation of the Broadway hit tells the story of the friendship between Elphaba, the misunderstood green-skinned witch, and Galinda, the popular blonde.
The movie is based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, a revisionist take on the tale from L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wicked: Part Two is set to follow in 2025, making this musical moment even more magical.
