TGL’s Steve Cohen optimistic PGA and LIV golfers can ‘reunite’
Steve Cohen believes there is hope that PGA Tour and LIV Golf members can find a way to reunite despite the ongoing civil war in the sport.
The Mets owner expressed the optimistic belief during a media event for New York Golf Club, a team competing in the indoor golf league TGL that’s launching in January.
“It’s a lot of moving parts and I think we’ll get there,” Cohen told reporters, according to Bloomberg.
“The goal is to reunite all the players — it’s fragmented right now,” he later said about the situation. “Getting to play in one tournament, one venue, whatever it is, is exciting.”
The divide between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has created a wedge in the sport of golf, but cautious optimism has crept in as Saudi-backed LIV and the PGA Tour have been trying to hammer out a merger.
The two groups shocked sports fans and golfers in June 2023 when they jointly announced plans for a merger.
The talks have not gone as smoothly, but there is a belief that things are moving in a good direction after PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF’s Yasir Al-Rymayyan played a round of golf together last month.
There is also an exhibition golf match scheduled next month between PGA Tour stars Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler and LIV Golf stars Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.
The TGL is a team golf league founded by Tiger Woods, McIlroy and former Golf Channel president Mike McCarley under their media venture TMRW Sports.
They’ve partnered with the PGA Tour and the league will feature six teams that play inside the SoFi Center, which is located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Cohen invested in the New York team along with Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, Jimmy Fallon and CC Sabathia.
