Three Years After His Death, the Memphis Star’s Legacy Lives On
Today marks three years since Memphis star Young Dolph lost his life, leaving a void in the rap industry.
The tragedy of his untimely passing on November 17th, 2021, at the age of 36, still resonates deeply with fans, artists, and the Memphis community. Known for his striking Southern accent and relentless work ethic, Dolph rose to fame with club bangers such as “Preach” and “Get Paid.” His independent approach to the music industry, especially through his Paper Route Empire label, earned him admiration across the hip-hop world, especially after the signing of superstar Key Glock.
Dolph’s commitment to artistic freedom and ownership led him to reject major label offers, choosing instead to build his empire and maintain creative control over his work. His 2016 debut album “King of Memphis” was a defining moment in his career, debuting at #49 on the Billboard 200.
Beyond his music, Dolph was celebrated for his philanthropic efforts in his hometown. He frequently donated to schools, supported families in need, and funded local initiatives in Memphis. One of his most notable contributions was his $25,000 donation to his alma mater, Hamilton High School, before his passing. He launched an annual turkey drive in his community in 2018, and at the time of his death, he was in Memphis for the event.
Dolph’s longtime partner, Mia Jaye, shared a touching tribute to him on the social media account of her nonprofit, Black Men Deserve to Grow Old.
“On this day 3 years ago, we lost the legendary Young Dolph. Although he’s not here in the physical, his legacy/spirit lives on through his children Tre & Aria, his family, P.R.E and the millions of fans he inspired through his music,” the post read.
Since his passing, Dolph’s legacy has been kept alive through posthumous music releases, such as the 2022 tribute album “Long Live Dolph,” and through the celebration of “Dolph Day” in Memphis, which is also being acknowledged today.
Although three years have passed and several people responsible for his murder have been arrested, Dolph’s legacy will live on, thanks to the timeless classics he delivered.
