What Happened to Sir Elton John’s Eye? Health Update

Sir Elton John has appeared on stage at the West End debut of The Devil Wears Prada musical, sharing an update on his health issues.

The 77-year-old music legend, who revealed he was battling an eye infection earlier this year, says he’s now lost his vision:

“As some of you may know, I have had issues, and now I have lost my sight,” Sir Elton said in a video shared by Storyful.

“I haven’t been able to see the (Devil Wears Prada) performance, but I have enjoyed it,” he added.

“To my husband, who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews. It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and boy, it sounded good tonight.”

Sir Elton wrote the score for the stage musical, based on the 2006 movie starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. The weekend’s West End performance was part of a charity gala for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

What happened to Sir Elton John’s vision?

Sir Elton shared news of his eye issues with fans in an Instagram post on September 3, describing it as a “severe” infection which happened while he was holidaying in the south of France.

“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he said, hoping for a full recovery at the time.

“I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks. I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far.”

He didn’t elaborate on the condition or what caused the infection.

Last month, he spoke with Good Morning America detailing his struggle to create more music. The beloved Rocketman said he felt “kind of stuck at the moment” because he’s unable to read lyrics or watch anything, but said despite his health issues, he felt “grateful” for his life.

However, he still has a number of projects being released, including a documentary about his life titled Never Too Late. It’s coming to Disney+ on December 13.
